I trained as a Relate Supervisor in 1999 and have been working as a supervisor at Relate and more recently in private practice since that time. I became a BACP Accredited Supervisor in 2006. I offer supervision to counsellors who work with both couples and individuals.
I like the definition of the goal of supervision that goes 'whatever seems most likely to send the other person away more aware, more informed, skilled and encouraged that he/she was when he/she came in'.
Just as with clients, the supervisee/supervisor relationship needs to be one that facilitates understanding and reflection, and give support to the supervisee. An experienced supervisee can then be enabled to take appropriate responsibility for ensuring that his/her work meets professional standards (para 57) of BACP Ethical Framework).
I have been fortunate to work with supervisors who have made it safe to share any anxieties I may have had with my client work. I have also benefitted from challenges about my work and I hope that the supervision I offer provides both in an appropriate way.
