Areas of counselling specialism

I have over 30 years experience of counselling couples on their relationship issues. I also have nine years experience of working in the University Hospital, Durham Staff Counsellor, covering a wide variety of organisational and work related issues. Clients may need help with managing anxiety or depression and can explore and find new ways of coping in the process of counselling and psychotherapy.

Personal approach

The quality of the relationship I build with my clients seems to me to be very important. I hope to create an environment where clients feel free to talk openly about whatever is troubling them, whether the client is an individual who is feeling troubled, or a couple who are needing counselling to help them manage their relationship in a better way.

My theoretical approach is integrative and I offer a choice of brief solution focussed work or longer in depth psychotherapy. The initial counselling session takes the form of an assessment in which I discuss with the client whether we can work usefully together. If this is not possible, I will discuss alternative sources of support for the client's particular situation.

During this initial session, I will talk to the client about confidentiality and the exceptions to this. I work strictly within the BACP Ethical Framework and am subject to its complaints procedure.
